TRB Annual Meeting 2027: Dates, Program and a Plan Worth the Trip

You can spend five days at a transport conference and return with an impressive notebook but no clearer answer to your research or engineering problem. At a meeting as broad as TRB, I would treat preparation as part of the attendance cost.

The TRB Annual Meeting 2027 runs from 10–14 January in Washington, DC. Here is how I would decide whether it belongs on your calendar, choose a useful program and compare it with three more specialised US events.

TRB 2027 dates and venues

Convened by the Transportation Research Board, part of the National Academies, the meeting takes place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and Marriott Marquis. Check the venue of each activity when planning your day; one conference does not mean every conversation happens in the same building.

Who should attend the TRB Annual Meeting?

I would shortlist TRB when you need research evidence, technical discussion or collaborators across transport disciplines. Its breadth can help an agency engineer compare approaches beyond their usual network, but it also makes an unfocused visit expensive.

For a PhD student, the useful question is whether the relevant researchers and methods appear in the program. For a practitioner, it is whether the evidence addresses your operating conditions, data limitations and implementation constraints.

Before committing to Washington, compare the communities in my 2027 transport research calendar. A smaller specialist meeting may deserve priority if your research question is narrow and your travel budget is limited.

Build your TRB 2027 program around a question

Start with the official TRB program and schedule page. At the October check, workshop descriptions were available, while full 2027 program details were announced for the autumn. The page also linked to a 2026 archive; use that for background, not as the 2027 timetable.

TRB offers lectern sessions, posters, workshops and committee meetings. I would use presentations to identify an approach, posters to question its assumptions and relevant committee meetings to understand the problems a technical community is still trying to solve.

Build a primary itinerary and a backup before booking informal meetings. Leave gaps for discussion: hearing a result is useful, but asking why it failed on a different network may be what changes your project.

Registration and hotels: choose the right access

The organiser's registration page lists ticket categories and inclusions. Early registration closes on 18 November 2026, with advance registration through 7 January 2027. Check which category applies before comparing costs.

At the October check, general early registration was $1,225, and meals were excluded. Student and other categories have separate conditions; an Expo Only pass does not include technical sessions, workshops or committee meetings.

Registration is required to reserve within the TRB hotel block. Reservations are accepted through 21 December 2026 or until the block sells out, whichever comes first. Compare the full trip cost, including accommodation, travel and time away from your work.

TRB or a more specialised US transport event?

I would compare these four options by the work you need to advance. A broad research meeting, a technology expo and a bus-operations conference can all be relevant to transport professionals while serving different purposes.

ITS America Conference & Expo would be my alternative for evaluating connected infrastructure and deployment options. Bring interoperability and maintenance questions, rather than judging a system by its demonstration.

APTA Mobility Conference is the more focused comparison for bus and paratransit teams. The TRB Smart Transportation Conference offers a narrower discussion of data, automation and intelligent infrastructure than the January Annual Meeting.

How I would plan the trip for your role

If you are a PhD student, organise TRB around one methodological question and a few researchers whose work you have read. Prepare a concise explanation of your own problem so a conversation can move beyond introductions.

If you are a senior engineer or agency planner, bring a live decision: a design assumption, evaluation method or evidence gap. Compare answers across sessions and record where the findings would need local validation.

If you are a technology buyer, choose TRB when research validation matters most; consider ITS America when supplier evaluation is the immediate task. A bus operator should compare APTA Mobility before committing to a broad research week.

If your collaborators or pilot sites are mainly in Europe, compare the 2027 European transport events calendar before booking a US trip. I would justify Washington through access to relevant people and evidence, then reserve time after returning to turn the strongest finding into a project action.
