The biggest AI conference is not automatically the best conference for your PhD. You need the room where people understand your question, challenge your method and remember your name after the poster comes down.
I selected these US events for research depth, credible communities and ways to participate beyond sitting in an audience. Start with your dissertation topic, then choose the conference that can move it forward.
1. WACV 2027: computer vision with an applied edge
4-8 JANUARY 2027 | BUENA VISTA, FLORIDA
WACV combines a computer-vision research conference with workshops and tutorials, with particular strength in practical applications. I would choose it for applied vision work and the chance to meet both academic and industry researchers.
2. HRI 2027: study the human beside the machine
8-12 MARCH 2027 | SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA
HRI is a leading multidisciplinary venue for human-robot interaction research. It fits PhD students working across robotics, intelligent systems, psychology, design or social behaviour who need feedback from more than one discipline.

3. ACM CHI 2027: where human-centred AI gets tested
10-14 MAY 2027 | PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA
CHI is the major international conference for human-computer interaction, making it essential for work on human-centred AI. The main paper deadline has passed, but posters, demos and the Student Research Competition accept submissions until 21 January 2027.
4. FLAIRS-40: a smaller room can work harder
24-27 MAY 2027 | ST. PETE BEACH, FLORIDA
FLAIRS offers papers, posters, tutorials and special tracks in a more sociable research setting. I would consider it for an early conference presentation, especially if direct conversations matter more than navigating an enormous programme.

5. NAACL 2027: bring your language models
1-5 JUNE 2027 | SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
NAACL is the specialist choice for natural-language processing, language technology and multimodal research. If your paper fits, note the published ARR submission deadline of 12 October 2026 and inspect the separate calls for demonstrations, industry work and workshops.
6. CVPR 2027: the computer-vision flagship
20-25 JUNE 2027 | SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
CVPR brings the computer-vision community together through the main conference, workshops and short courses. I would prioritise it for frontier vision research, recruiting conversations and a concentrated view of what the field considers important.

7. ICAPS 2027: plan before the agents act
27 JUNE-2 JULY 2027 | COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA
ICAPS is the focused venue for automated planning, scheduling and intelligent decision-making. Abstracts are due 7 December 2026 and papers on 14 December, making it a practical target for robotics, optimisation or agent-planning researchers.
8. ACM KDD 2027: more than another machine-learning conference
1-5 AUGUST 2027 | SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA
KDD separates research, applied data science, datasets and benchmarks, and AI-for-science tracks. That structure helps you place your contribution correctly and meet researchers, benchmark builders and practitioners working on knowledge discovery at scale.

9. RecSys 2027: find your specialist community
23-27 AUGUST 2027 | HONOLULU, HAWAII
RecSys is the dedicated ACM home for recommender-systems research and practice. Attend if your PhD covers personalisation, ranking, user modelling or responsible recommendation and you want conversations with people who share the same technical vocabulary.

How I would choose if I were doing your PhD
Early-stage students should favour workshops, tutorials and smaller venues such as FLAIRS, where exploratory work can generate useful conversations. Later-stage students should target the flagship conference closest to the dissertation and plan meetings before arriving.
Choose NAACL for language, WACV or CVPR for vision, HRI for robotics with people in the loop, CHI for human-centred systems, ICAPS for planning, KDD for knowledge discovery and RecSys for personalisation. One precise community is more valuable than five generic AI expos.
