A room full of business cards can still leave you without a useful contact. Before choosing your 2027 business networking events, decide whose experience, buying responsibility or professional interests would make a conversation worth continuing.
I would build the calendar around that person, then choose the city and format. This US guide starts with New York and Chicago, using six events to show how broad small-business networking differs from founder communities, industry exhibitions and scheduled meetings.
The shortlist covers in-person events within the two cities. Dates and access information were checked on 27 October 2026; the professional recommendations are my interpretation of the published audiences and formats.
Who has the time to read all that?
If you don't have the time to read all of my analysis, you can skip straight to my comparison table of most promising business networking events in NY and Chicago.
1. Start with the relationship you want
Looking for customers? Define the kind of organisation that could buy from you and the person involved in that decision. A crowded event becomes less attractive when most attendees sell to the same audience you do.
For collaborators, I would look for complementary skills and shared problems. An architect seeking a specialist contractor needs a different conversation from a founder testing a product idea with other operators.
Career contacts and investor relationships need their own approach. You may want to understand a role, find a mentor or discuss an investment thesis; none of those objectives is captured particularly well by “meet more people”.
If the people you need work specifically in AI, use my US AI events guide to examine the specialist audiences. Transport, logistics and mobility professionals can make the same decision through my US transport and mobility guide.
Pro tip
If you need industrial partners in Houston, my Houston networking guide separates hydrogen-sector relationships from broader local business introductions.
2. Match the format to your objective
A mixer gives you freedom to circulate, but you do much of the filtering yourself. For a first visit, I would ask how introductions work and whether a host helps newcomers join conversations.
A referral meeting can make sense when you want relationships that develop over repeated visits. Check guest limits, membership commitments and any restrictions on competing professions before treating one meeting as an open networking opportunity.
Workshops offer a shared task that can reveal how someone thinks. Founder gatherings can give you relevant peers and investor perspectives, although an investor appearing on a panel does not mean you have secured a pitch meeting.
A business conference combines learning with informal or organised introductions. An expo gives you products and suppliers to discuss; when you need a defined counterpart, a programme of pre-scheduled meetings offers a different level of structure.
For professional networking events, I would inspect the mechanism before the headline attendance figure. Ask whether the programme creates time with relevant people, how that time is allocated and what your ticket actually includes.

3. New York: business owners, construction teams and travel media
Small Business Expo NYC: start with local operating needs
The New York City Spring Small Business Expo is scheduled for 29 April 2027 at the Javits Convention Center. Its programme combines workshops, exhibitors and structured networking for owners, entrepreneurs and B2B professionals; general admission is advertised as free.
I would prioritise it for a business owner comparing service providers or seeking complementary local partners. If your main objective is enterprise procurement or venture funding, check the audience carefully before assuming that a broad business show concentrates those decision-makers.
New York Build: give the conversation a project context
For contractors, architects, engineers and construction suppliers, New York Build offers an industry-specific alternative on 2–3 March 2027 at Javits. The organiser advertises free tickets, conference tracks, workshops and networking parties.
I would bring a project brief: the building type, delivery constraint and expertise you need. That gives a potential partner something concrete to respond to, whereas a general introduction may reveal little about whether you could work together.
IMM North America: choose scheduled travel-media relationships
TravMedia’s IMM North America takes place on 20–21 January 2027 at Javits. The event connects travel brands and tourism organisations with media through pre-scheduled meetings and networking; the TravMedia Summit precedes the appointment day.
This is my specialist choice for travel PR and destination-marketing teams. Check the exhibitor and media registration routes separately, including meeting access and current fees; it serves a defined professional exchange rather than general customer prospecting.
4. Chicago: distinguish startup learning from business services
SeedCon: entrepreneurship with an investor perspective
The Polsky Center’s Rattan L. Khosa SeedCon is scheduled for 29 January 2027 at the David Rubenstein Forum. Chicago Booth’s entrepreneurship and venture-capital conference combines fireside chats, panels and networking, with an audience extending beyond the university.
I would shortlist it for founders, students exploring entrepreneurship and professionals entering the startup community.
The linked registration page lists student, founder, VC and general professional ticket categories; choose the appropriate route and check its current price, rather than assuming campus affiliation is required.
Pro Tip: test the attendee fit before paying
Write one sentence naming the person you want to meet and the question you would ask them. Look for that role in the published audience and networking programme, then ask the organiser how introductions are arranged if the mechanism is unclear.
OWS27: make the business-services connection specific
IAOP advertises OWS27 for 27–29 April 2027 at BCBS Tower, 300 East Randolph. Its announced focus includes outsourcing, global business services, governance and facilitated connections between buyers, providers, advisers and practitioners.
I would favour this audience for an outsourcing leader seeking peers or a provider testing how buyers evaluate delivery and governance. The main page contains a preliminary timetable that conflicts with the advertised dates, so reconfirm the schedule before committing to travel.
The OWS27 ticket page currently lists a $2,095 member pass, a $2,295 conference-and-membership bundle and a $2,795 non-member pass. The $395 governance workshop is an add-on, not conference admission; compare inclusions before choosing the lowest visible price.
Pro tip
For other local formats, my Chicago networking guide compares startup competitions, supplier meetings and leadership gatherings.
Small Business Expo Chicago: broad owner-to-owner discovery
For broader business networking events in Chicago, the Chicago Small Business Expo is scheduled for 10 June 2027 at the Isadore & Sadie Dorin Forum at UIC. The organiser describes workshops, exhibitors, structured networking and speed-networking opportunities for owners, startups and B2B professionals.
I would use it for local partnerships and practical business needs, then compare badge inclusions at registration. Between the New York and Chicago editions, choose the market where you can continue the relationship afterward; attending both needs a stronger reason than duplicating your contact list.
5. Six business events at a glance
| Event | 2027 dates | City and venue | Who I would prioritise | Access or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IMM North America | 20–21 January | New York; Javits | Travel PR and destination marketers | Separate exhibitor and media routes; check fees |
| Rattan L. Khosa SeedCon | 29 January | Chicago; David Rubenstein Forum | Founders, students and startup professionals | Role-based tickets; check prices and availability |
| New York Build | 2–3 March | New York; Javits | Construction and design professionals | Free tickets advertised; specialist audience |
| OWS27 | 27–29 April advertised | Chicago; BCBS Tower | Outsourcing and business-services teams | Member and non-member passes; reconfirm timetable |
| Small Business Expo NYC, Spring | 29 April | New York; Javits | Owners and B2B service providers | Free general admission; check badge inclusions |
| Small Business Expo Chicago | 10 June | Chicago; Dorin Forum at UIC | Owners seeking local partners and services | Check current badge prices and inclusions |
These events illustrate different relationship goals, rather than a ranking of cities. A local owner may gain more from a nearby expo than a flight to a specialist conference, while a travel-media professional may need IMM’s particular counterpart and meeting structure.
If you already serve Chicago clients, I would start there and reserve New York travel for a relationship you cannot develop as effectively nearby. If you are entering a new market, identify potential follow-up meetings before booking; one event can introduce you to people, but you still need a practical way to keep talking.
6. Check access and justify the whole trip
Before registering, check whether you need a guest invitation, an application, professional credentials or membership. Confirm that networking sessions are included, and distinguish event admission from exhibiting, sponsorship and paid upgrades.
Then add transport, accommodation, meals and time away from work to the ticket cost. Set a modest outcome you can assess: three relevant follow-up conversations, a supplier shortlist or feedback on one operating problem.
If your employer needs a written case, adapt the employee example in my conference application templates. Explain who you intend to meet, why those conversations matter and what you will bring back to the team.
For a membership bundle, consider whether you will use the community during the rest of the year. I would compare the full annual commitment with a standalone pass, including renewal terms, rather than treating a conference discount as sufficient reason to join an association.
Where I would start in your position
Small-business owners and independent service providers should start with the Small Business Expo in the city they serve. Early-career professionals interested in startups should examine SeedCon’s student or general professional route, especially when learning from founders matters more than immediate sales.
Construction engineers, architects and project suppliers should prioritise New York Build. Travel PR teams should investigate IMM, while outsourcing buyers and business-services leaders should examine OWS27’s programme and facilitated connections.
Founders seeking investment should consider SeedCon for its entrepreneurship and VC community, then verify opportunities for direct discussion. I would treat any funding conversation as the beginning of due diligence, with a clear explanation of the company, its evidence and the help it needs.
Pro Tip 1: tailor the follow-up to the person
Send a potential supplier your project brief, a founder the promised customer insight and a professional peer the resource you discussed. Agree the next step during the conversation, then follow up with enough context to make continuing it straightforward.
Pro Tip 2: check my small business-dedicated guide
If you also need owner advice, lender conversations or procurement contacts, my small business networking guide compares those different routes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose business networking events in the US?
Start with the people you need to meet, then compare the audience, introduction format, access rules and total cost. This guide uses New York and Chicago examples rather than presenting a complete national calendar.
Are there free business networking events in NYC in 2027?
Small Business Expo NYC advertises free general admission for its 29 April Spring edition. New York Build also advertises free tickets for 2–3 March; check what each registration includes.
Which Chicago event suits founders and startup professionals?
I would examine SeedCon on 29 January for entrepreneurship and venture-capital perspectives. For broader local business relationships and service-provider discovery, compare the Chicago Small Business Expo on 10 June.
Does a business conference ticket include investor or buyer meetings?
Check the specific ticket and meeting rules. Panels, general networking, pre-scheduled appointments and facilitated introductions are different experiences; admission alone does not establish access to a particular investor or buyer.
